Myrrh, the Golden Oil of Skincare

broken image

"Worth its weight in gold" is a phrase commonly used to denote something of extreme value. However, its literal significance may not always be implied. In the case of myrrh resin, historical records confirm its literal value in gold at various points in history. Derived from the gummy resin of a small, thorny tree, myrrh essential oil has been extensively used for traditional wellness practices and enhancing skin health and appearance. Let's take a closer look at dōTERRA® Myrrh, the Golden Oil of Skincare.

Warm and earthy, Myrrh possesses a slightly sweet aroma, making it a sought-after ingredient in the perfume industry. Beyond its enticing scent, Myrrh has skin-calming properties, promoting a more youthful complexion. When blended with a moisturizer, one drop of this thick and valuable oil, packaged in a compact 5 mL bottle, can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In the biblical account of Esther, myrrh is explicitly mentioned as part of the purification and beauty treatments given to candidates vying for the position of the new queen of Persia.

If you're open to using Myrrh oil for purposes other than skincare, diffusing it can create a balanced atmosphere. For conservation purposes, we recommend using only one drop in these diffuser blends.

Intuition Blend:

1 drop Sandalwood

1 drop Myrrh

1 drop Clary Sage

Similar to Clove, Myrrh can also contribute to oral hygiene. Adding one to two drops of Myrrh to a small amount of water and gargling creates a gentle and natural mouth rinse. Myrrh's cleansing properties have historically earned it a place of significance, notably as one of the gifts presented to baby Jesus in Bethlehem. In the spirit of Christmas, consider mixing one drop each of Myrrh, Frankincense, and a fir oil in your diffuser for a royally festive space.

Comfort + Joy Blend:

1 drop Douglas Fir

1 drop Myrrh

1 drop Frankincense

When discussing Myrrh oil, it's important to note that over time, the oil may become hardened. If this occurs, soaking the closed bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes should resolve the issue. Even if your Myrrh oil remains fluid, be aware that it tends to drip more slowly than other oils, requiring a bit more patience as you await each precious drop.

Myrrh essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the resin from the small, thorny myrrh tree native to regions in Africa and the Middle East. Harvesters make controlled cuts into the bark to release the tree's sap, which eventually hardens and dries into a glossy, amber-colored resin. This resin, darkening over time, is then steam distilled to produce dōTERRA Myrrh. The tree's rugged, angled, and thorny appearance against the desert landscape gives it an ancient allure. Cherished since antiquity and utilized from ancient incense to modern diffusing, Myrrh remains renowned for its skin benefits, ensuring its golden uses are passed down from generation to generation.
